Lalena Herder Customs wants this site to be usable by as many people as possible — including people using a keyboard instead of a mouse, a screen reader, a phone, or the “reduce motion” setting on their device.
We aim at the WCAG 2.1 Level AA guidelines. We are not claiming certified conformance, because the site has not been through a formal third-party audit. Below is an honest account of what was actually measured and what was not.
What was measured and corrected
Text contrast was computed against this page’s actual background (#d9d0c4) rather than estimated by eye. Where a color did not reach the standard for its size, the color was changed:
- Body text measures 10.85:1 — comfortably past the 4.5:1 minimum.
- Secondary text measures 5.02:1.
- Links, small labels, the “required” and “optional” markers, form hints and the wordmark subtitle were all moved to darker tones that reach at least 4.5:1. Several of them did not before.
- Gallery captions sit on a dark scrim and measure 12.51:1.
- No pure white text anywhere, which reduces glare on a bright screen.
Movement
- If your device asks for reduced motion, the site honours it: the gallery becomes a plain grid, the hero parallax stops, and the drifting photographs hold still. The photographs stay — only the motion stops.
- The intro video starts silent. Sound only begins if you tap or click. It does not loop endlessly at you.
- Nothing flashes, strobes, or blinks.
Keyboard and structure
- A “Skip to content” link is the first thing a keyboard reaches.
- Controls show a visible focus outline when tabbed to.
- Headings run in order, so a screen reader can jump through the page by section.
- Photographs have written descriptions of the actual room, not filenames.
- Decorative elements are hidden from screen readers so they are not read aloud as noise.
The form
- Every field has a real label, not just placeholder text.
- Errors are attached to the field they belong to and announced, not shown only as a color change.
- Only name, email, and what you need are required. Phone, town, notes, and the photo are optional.
- The page does not scroll sideways on a phone at 375 pixels wide.
What has not been checked
The contrast, motion, structure, and keyboard behaviour above were measured directly. The site has not been walked end to end with every screen reader and browser combination, and it has not been reviewed by an independent accessibility auditor. There may be problems we have not found.
